چکیده

JET data for the correlations between pedestal plasma temperature and density with the frequency of different type ELMs are analyzed in the framework of a classical Focker-Planck approach. In first approximation we derive a functional dependence in steady state of ELMs assuming equality between the outward flux of plasma from the core and the loss of plasma from the pedestal into the SOL. In this assumption one expects equality between ELM frequency and Coulomb collisionality in the pedestal plasma. Our analysis of JET and TCV data shows that the derived formula for density dependence on temperature is obeyed in wide range of ELM size (including ELM III) but with varying coefficient that corresponds to the configurations of the engineering parameters. The values of this constant differ from that in the FockerPlanck solution for diffusion transport indicating the impact of non-diffusion transport.

Correlations of ELM frequency with pedestal plasma character- istics

Theoretical study of ELMs as a relaxation phenomenon has been performed. It is motivated by the balance between plasma heating and the loss of energy during ELM turbulences. The energy balance is examined for particular heating scheme with neutral beam injection (NBI) in steady state scenarios of ASDEX Upgrade, JET, DIII-D and JT-60U with ELM oscillations. In this approach we have calculated th...

Pedestal Turbulence Dynamics in ELMing and ELM-free H-mode Plasmas

Measurements of long wavelength density fluctuations in the pedestal region of DIII-D plasmas have revealed several important features of edge instabilities during type I edge localized mode (ELMing) and ELMfree discharges. These features, measured with a 2D array of beam emission spectroscopy channels, include: toroidal field and spatial dependence of two distinct frequency bands (50–150 kHz a...

ELM Mitigation by Supersonic Molecular Beam Injection into the H-mode Pedestal in HL-2A Tokamak

Density profiles in pedestal region (H-mode) are measured in HL-2A and the characteristics of the density pedestal are described. Cold particle deposition by Supersonic Molecular Beam Injection (SMBI) within the pedestal is verified. ELM mitigation by SMBI into the H-mode pedestal is demonstrated and the relevant physics is elucidated. The sensitivity of the effect to SMBI pressure and duration...

Towards the construction of a model to describe the inter-ELM evolution of the pedestal on MAST

Pedestal profiles that span the ELM cycle have been obtained and used to test the idea that the pedestal pressure gradient in MAST is limited by the onset of Kinetic Ballooning Modes (KBMs). During the inter-ELM period of a regularly type I ELM-ing discharge on MAST, the pressure pedestal height and width increase together while the pressure gradient increases by only 15 % during the ELM cycle....

Integrated Simulation of ELM Energy Loss and Cycle in Improved H-mode Plasmas

The energy loss due to an edge localized mode (ELM) crash and its cycle have been studied by using an integrated transport code with a stability code for peeling-ballooning modes and a transport model of scrape-off-layer (SOL) and divertor plasmas. The integrated code reproduces a series of ELMs with the following characteristics. The ELM energy loss increases with decreasing the collisionality...
